‘Wild Barts Can’t Be Token’
The latest “Treehouse of Horror XXXIV” episode of The Simpsons, entitled “Wild Barts Can’t Be Token,” playfully engaged with the non-fungible token (NFT) craze. In this installment, Bart becomes an NFT on the blockchain by accident, mirroring the frenzy surrounding NFTs in Springfield’s universe.
Following Homer’s mishap, he’s delighted to find the Bart NFT’s value soared to $1.5 million. The digital token showcases Bart, pants down and smirking, standing on a pedestal. When Homer reveals to his wife that Bart’s image is now secured on his smartphone, Marge lets out a scream. “He’s an NFT,” Homer clarifies to his distraught spouse.
In the episode, Marge embarks on a quest to rescue Bart, assisted by the “enlightened intellects who safeguard the crypto-verse.” Kylie Jenner steps in to help Marge devise her strategy. Transforming into an NFT herself, Marge navigates the blockchain metaverse, with Jenner supplying the key to extract Bart from the digital ledger.
Ultimately, Marge’s mission is a success, yet Homer, drawn by the allure of becoming an NFT, finds that by the time he does so, the excitement surrounding NFTs, at least in the fictional world of Springfield, has faded. The Simpsons have previously dabbled with cryptocurrencies such as bitcoin (BTC), with the 18th episode of the 32nd season displaying the BTC price ticker as the infinity symbol.
During the episode’s 2021 broadcast, BTC was trading above the $60,000 mark. In the preceding season, episode 13 featured Jim Parsons of The Big Bang Theory comedy television series delivering a brief explainer on cryptocurrency. Before the 2020 broadcast with Parsons, The Simpsons alluded to bitcoin (BTC) in two previous episodes as well.
