Google Inbox is officially gone, and for many, it's a hard pill to swallow. Hardcore fans are desperate to try and fill the void that Inbox has left. Here's a piece of good news. The Simplify Gmail extension for Chrome will bring you the familiar simplicity of Google Inbox to Google Gmail!
Simplify Gmail Extension
This extension was created by Michael Leggett, who was a lead designer for Gmail and co-founded Inbox. Based on that alone, this extension is worth a look. Here are a few before and after pictures without the extension first and with the extension second.
Per the website:
Simplify was made by me, Michael Leggett, with some help from friends. I was Gmail's lead designer from 2008 to 2012 and co-founded Google Inbox.
Let's do some comparison screenshots.
Home Page (Gmail)
By default, Gmail has a lot going on. There are buttons everywhere and it can be a bit difficult to follow.

What sticks out to me is the navigation bar at the top and the side bar on the right. Overall, the layout just makes me feel a bit more calm since there's less going on. There's also a noticeable add icon in the bottom right now.
Side Menu Closed (Gmail)
Even with the side menu closed, there's still a lot going on in the collapsed view. Lots of buttons and user icons.

No extras, no distractions. Look how clean and simple that is! It reminds me of Zen Mode in Visual Studio Code.

The icons above the email are gone now, which helps. Also viewing an email looks even better without the extra sidebar buttons.
Conclusion
If you're heartbroken over the ending of Google Inbox, there might be hope. Give the Simplify Gmail extension and try for extra simplicty with a zen feel. Also, don't forget Gmail has added lots of Inbox features over the past several months. You might not be missing as much as you thought you were going to!
