Can JavaScript Detect the Browser’s Zoom Level?
21.4.2020
No, not really.
My first guess was that this was intentionally not exposed in browsers because browsers intentionally don’t want us fighting it — or making well-intentioned but bad-outcome decisions based on that info. But I don’t see any evidence of that.

CSS Findings From The New Facebook Design
7.4.2020
Ahmad Shadeed digs around the new Facebook’s front-end code.
One that stood out to me:
.element {
inset: 4px 0;
/* Which is equivalent to: top: 4px, bottom: 4px, left: 0, right: 0 */
}
Whaaat? This is the first I’ve heard of the inset property. Ahmad said he saw it working...
CSS-Only Marquee Effect
5.4.2020
You make sure the text is more than twice the width of the screen, then use negative translate animations to do the marquee movement.
You’ll probably want to aria-hidden all but one of them if you need to duplicate the text. Or, you could use a very clever CSS trick...
How to use CSS Scroll Snap
27.3.2020
Nada Rifki demonstrates the scroll-snap-type and scroll-snap-alignCSS properties. I like that the demo shows that the items in the scrolling container can be different sizes. It is the edges of those children that matter, not some fixed snapping distance.
I like Max Kohler's coverage...
Shelter-in-Place for Cash? 2 Bills Submitted by US Congress Mention ‘Digital Dollars’
24.3.2020
During the last few days, members of the U.S. Congress have been trying to pen a stimulus plan to help the American economy. Since then, a few bills have been submitted by representatives and two particular proposals House democrats have tabled talk about a “digital dollar”...
A Few Background Patterns Sites
18.3.2020
If I need a quick background pattern to spruce something up, I often think of the CSS3 Patterns Gallery. Some of those are pretty intense but remember they are easily editable because they are just CSS. That means you could take these bold zags and chill them out.

Flexbox and absolute positioning
18.3.2020
Chen Hui Jing notes that when you absolutely position a flex item, it's no longer part of the flex layout. Except... it kinda is a little bit. If you make the child position: absolute; but don't apply any top/right/bottom/left properties, then flexbox alignment will still apply to it.
It's odd...
A Complete Guide to calc() in CSS
17.3.2020
CSS has a special calc() function for doing basic math. Here's an example:
.main-content {
/* Subtract 80px from 100vh */
height: calc(100vh - 80px);
}
In this guide, let's cover just about everything there is to know about this very useful function.
calc() is for values

Weaving a Line Through Text in CSS
26.2.2020
Earlier this year, I came across this demo by Florin Pop, which makes a line go either over or under the letters of a single line heading. I thought this was a cool idea, but there were a few little things about the implementation I felt I could simplify and improve at the same time.
First off,...
Get Moving (or not) with CSS Motion Path
3.2.2020
We just linked up the idea that offset-path can be cleverly used to set type on a path. Don't miss Michelle Barker's experimentation either, with drawing paths or animating text along a path.
Dan Wilson has also been following this tech for quite a while and points out why the sudden surge...
Use and Reuse Everything in SVG… Even Animations!
28.1.2020
If you are familiar with SVG and CSS animations and started to work with them often, here are some ideas you might want to keep in mind before jumping into the job. This article will be about learning how to build and optimize your code with <use> element, CSS Variables and...
The Modern Lovers
20.1.2020
I love stuff like this.
The Modern Lovers, a rock band in the 70's, play a show in Boston, probably having some poster of their own for the show.
Mike Joyce is inspired by the music and combines his love of it with the design style of Swiss Modernism to create a new poster for it.
Pete Barr...
Animate Text on Scroll
13.1.2020
We covered the idea of animating curved text not long ago when a fun New York Times article came out. All I did was peek into how they did it and extract the relevant parts to a more isolated demo.
That demo is here:

Water.css
11.1.2020
It's notable that Water.css was the #1 clicked thing from Louis Lazaris' Web Tools Weekly in 2019. It's from a 13-year old developer named Felix!
It's just a little bit of CSS you apply to class-free semantic HTML to give it nice basic responsive styles — the perfect kind of thing for a...
CSS-Only Carousel
10.1.2020
It's kind of amazing how far HTML and CSS will take you when building a carousel/slideshow.
Setting some boxes in a horizontal row with flexbox is easy.
Showing only one box at a time with overflow and making it swipable with -webkit-overflow-scrolling is easy.
You can make the "slides" line...
How Auto Margins Work in Flexbox
6.1.2020
Robin has covered this before, but I've heard some confusion about it in the past few weeks and saw another person take a stab at explaining it, and I wanted to join the party.
Say you have a flex container with some flex items inside that don't fill the whole area.

Make a smooth shadow, friend.
19.12.2019
One box-shadow is cool and all, but check out Philipp Brumm's tool for building out comma-separated multiple box-shadows, which result in a much smoother and more natural look.
This reminds me very much of the idea for easing linear-gradient. In a gradient, this smoothing effect is handled...
Making a Better Custom Select Element
11.12.2019
We just covered The Current State of Styling Selects in 2019, but we didn't get nearly as far and fancy as Julie Grundy gets here. There is a decent chunk of JavaScript that powers it, so I'm still very much eyeballing browsers' recent interest in giving us more powerful selects in (presumably)...
Masking GIFs with other GIFs
3.12.2019
The other day, Cassie Evans tweeted a really neat trick that I’ve never seen before: using SVG to mask one GIF on top of another. The effect is quite lovely, especially if you happen to grab a colorful GIF and place it on top of a monochrome one:

Pac-Man… in CSS!
11.11.2019
You all know famous Pac-Man video game, right? The game is fun and building an animated Pac-Man character in HTML and CSS is just as fun! I’ll show you how to create one while leveraging the powers of the clip-path property.
