Amazing User Agent API with userstack
17.1.2019
We do our best to design and code websites so that they look and perform the way they should regardless of device or browser, but the truth is we sometimes we need to code for specific device, browser, or crawler. Whether it’s a quick hack or a simply wanting to display different content...
CSS doesn’t suck
15.1.2019
I'm not so protective of CSS that I'm above hearing it criticized, but I'm certainly in agreement here. CSS does not suck. I love how the post is framed to hype up current CSS features the way features of other languages and tools are hyped:
Imagine if a tech dude walked on stage at a conference...
Design v17
14.1.2019
We rolled out a new site design on January 1! This is the 17th version of CSS-Tricks if you can believe that. The versions tend to evolve a decent amount beyond the initial launch, but we archive screenshots on this design history page. Like I said in our 2018 thank you post:
This is easily...
Slice and Dice a Disc with CSS
13.1.2019
I recently came across an interesting sliced disc design. The disc had a diagonal gradient and was split into horizontal slices, offset a bit from left to right. Naturally, I started to think what would the most efficient way of doing it with CSS be.
Sliced gradient disc.
The first thought...
Re: Pleasing Color Palettes
11.1.2019
There are so many tools out there to help you pick colors. I totally get it! It's hard! When colors are done well, it's like magic. It adds a level of polish to a design that can really set it apart.
Let's look at some, then talk about this idea some more.
Here's one I just saw called Color...
The 10,000 Year Clock Design Principals
8.1.2019
In the new year edition of the Clearleft newsletter, Jeremy Keith linked to the design principals Danny Hillis thought about while considering a clock that would work for 10,000 years.
Here's part of that page, satisfyingly displayed as a <dl>:
Longevity:
Go slow
Avoid sliding friction...
The Elements of UI Engineering
4.1.2019
I really enjoyed this post by Dan Abramov. He defines his work as a UI engineer and I especially like what he writes about his learning experience:
My biggest learning breakthroughs weren’t about a particular technology. Rather, I learned the most when I struggled to solve a particular UI problem....
Thank You (2018 Edition)
1.1.2019
Another year come and gone! As we do each year, let's take a look at the past year from an analytical by-the-numbers perspective and do a goal review. Most importantly, I'd like extend the deepest of thanks to you, wonderful readers of CSS-Tricks, for making this place possible.

A Quick CSS Audit and General Notes About Design Systems
31.12.2018
I’ve been auditing a ton of CSS lately and thought it would be neat to jot down how I’m going about doing that. I’m sure there are a million different ways to do this depending on the size and scale of your app and how your CSS works under the hood, so please take all this with a grain of salt....
People Talkin’ Shapes
22.12.2018
Codrops has a very nice article on CSS Shapes from Tania Rascia. You might know shape-outside is for redefining the area by which text is floated around that element, allowing for some interesting design opportunities. But there are a couple of genuine CSS tricks in here:
Float shape-outside...

Web Designs That Feel Like Ancient History, but Are More Recent Than You Think
12.12.2018
Flickr announced not long ago that they are limiting free accounts to 1,000 photos. I don't particularly mind that (because it seems like sound business sense), although it is a bit sad that a ton of photos will be nuked from the internet. I imagine the Internet Archive will swoop in and get most...
Nesting Components in Figma
30.11.2018
For the past couple of weeks, I’ve been building our UI Kit at Gusto, where I work, and this is a Figma document that contains all of our design patterns and components so that designers on our team can hop in, go shopping for a component that they need, and then get back to working on the problem...

WDRL — Edition 249: Better design briefs, mental models, practical crypto and how IT radicalized the world.
23.11.2018
Hey,
How much does design affect the perception of our product and the users who see this? To me it’s getting clearer that design makes all the difference and that unifying designs to a standard model like the Google Material Design Kit doesn’t work well. By using it, you of course get a decent...

Hey,
Plans are plans but sometimes reality has something different for us. I hadn’t planned to skip two weeks but after an exhausting week followed a week of sickness.
What does career change mean? Is it about climbing up a ladder, is it changing the purpose of your work? There’s a common...

What is design debt and how does it occur?
1.10.2018
Today, I want to talk about design debt. We often hear about technical debt and not so much about design debt. They are in fact different from one another...
